Selected To Appear in Giving USA
Dennis
Chapman, Development Director for Kansas
City’s City Union Mission and a professional
photographer, is among five photographers
whose work was selected through an international
competition to appear in Giving USA,
America’s authoritative report on
charitable giving in the United States.
Dennis, who began a “second
career” as a photographer in 1978,
manages a development staff of 14 and is
guiding a $12 million capital campaign to
double capacity for emergency men’s
shelter and long-term recovery programs
for the Mission. His photo of a mother resting
against a wall with a torn blanket covering
her two young children will be featured
in the inside pages of the book. A second
photo – a weathered pair of hands
holding what is left of two ancient widow’s
mites from the Holy Land – will be
featured in the book and as part of a national
advertising campaign promoting the book.
Dennis’
work was selected from more than 100 submissions
by nonprofits worldwide. Winners Michael
Bisceglie, Holly Eaton, Dave Bushle and
Marcelo Spina Hering represent such world-renowned
organizations as Save the Children, Habitat
for Humanity, the American Red Cross and
the United Nation’s World Food Programme.
Finalists’ photos
were judged by a blue-ribbon panel comprised
of: Steven Bollinger, Emory University (retired);
John Lawrence, Lamar Dodd Art Center, LaGrange
College; David Lester, Lester & Associates;
Leslie Biggins Mollsen, American City Bureau,
Inc.; and JD Scott, JD Scott Photographic
and Design. Entries were judged based on
the picture’s ability to tell a compelling
story and represent “giving.”
“We are
extremely proud to have one of our nonprofit
partners featured in a publication of such
national significance,” said JB&A
President & CEO Jeffrey D. Byrne.
“It is appropriate that the excellent
photography in this case came from City
Union Mission which, with the vast majority
of its support coming from individuals,
exemplifies what Giving USA is
trying to teach. They are excellent stewards
of donors’ dollars and give of themselves
each and every day.”
“Giving USA
has been and continues to be an increasingly
essential resource about our nation’s
philanthropic tendencies. And these photos
enhance the work of our dedicated research
team by showing arresting visuals that tell
the stories behind the numbers,” said
Giving USA Foundation™ Vice Chairman
Del Martin, a partner in the Atlanta-based
fundraising consulting firm of Alexander
Haas Martin & Partners, Inc.
