Gary Rick joins Jeffrey Byrne & Associates with 23 years of YMCA management and membership development experience. Throughout his YMCA career, Gary has successfully developed teams of volunteers, members, community leaders and staff, all working in the best interest of the YMCA.
He offers Jeffrey Byrne & Associates, Inc., clients a unique operations perspective, having successfully managed diverse metro and independent YMCAs: Vice President of the YMCA of Greater High Point, NC; CEO of Meadville YMCA, PA; Executive Director of two branches in Pittsburgh, PA, and Associate Executive Director of West Shore Branch, Harrisburg YMCA, PA. Additionally, Gary served as Director of Program Development for the five-branch association in Harrisburg.
Gary has a reputation of turning deficits into surpluses by increasing membership and program revenue while effectively managing expenses. At the High Point Central Family YMCA in NC, he turned a $20,000 deficit into a $112,000 surplus in one year, increasing membership revenue by more than $100,000 in a 12 month period. At the Wilmerding Branch of the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh, in an economically-disadvantaged community, he turned a $90,000 operating deficit into a surplus and provided leadership to a capital campaign that led to an $800,000 facility expansion and continuing success.
Because of his membership development success, Gary was chosen to lead the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh’s 16-branch association-wide membership task force. In two years association-wide membership revenue increased by more than $1.5 million as he built successful best practices around new member acquisition, including the initiation of an association-wide membership. Gary was also selected by Y-USA staff to serve as Membership/Program Facilitator for Western Pennsylvania.
Gary has been a trainer for YMCA of the USA for more than 10 years, facilitating the membership and marketing modules, including “Introduction to Not-for-Profit Marketing”, “Marketing Research”, “Pricing”, “Recruit, Retain and Recapture” and “Membership by Design”. Gary also developed and delivered an original training event, “18 Ways to Create New Programs” which was later integrated into the YMCA of the USA’s Program Innovation Book. He has just completed the development of a new membership referral program model, “Referrals by Design”. Gary has written and delivered motivational speeches, such as the “12 Rules of Success in Business.” He also authored a training event, “What We Can Learn from the Businesses in our Neighborhood.”
Gary holds B.S. degree in Business Administration/Marketing from Penn State University. He resides in Pittsburgh, PA.
